What We Do

The Center for Child Injury Prevention Studies (CChIPS) is a National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center. CChIPS brings together researchers from the Injury Biomechanics Research Center at The Ohio State University, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and the University of Pennsylvania. Our researchers strive to advance the safety of children, youth, and young adults by facilitating the conduct of scientific inquiry into the causes and mechanisms of injury, and by translating these findings into commercial application and public education programs for prevention.

CChIPS gathers industrial support from its Industry Advisory Board (IAB). The IAB consists of one representative from each of CChIPS’s full member companies, who meet several times a year to discuss CChIPS research progress, receive technical updates, and offer practical direction. Through these collaborative efforts, CChIPS aims to advance the knowledge of child injury mechanisms and create an international research community that seamlessly translates research to prevention.

CChIPS’s endeavors are based on the fact that children are not simply small adults. Children’s various and ever-changing body proportions, bone and tissue strength, and developmental levels all play a role in the complicated science of keeping them safe. Currently, the majority of CChIPS research focuses on preventing traffic injuries, which is the leading cause of death for children, youth, and young adults.
